Most baseball pitchers hardly dare dream of an 825 winning percentage.
But that was Dan Strellner's record as a four-year starter in baseball at Coe, 1972 through 1975. Dan won 19 games and lost only four on the mound for the Kohawks.
He set an all-time career strikeout record of 193 and pitched several games with 16 strikeouts to his credit. He threw a no-hitter and two one-hitters for Coe.
But pitcher was not Dan's only place in the line-up. He was named to the All-Midwest Conference first team three times, twice as a pitcher and once as an outfielder. Twice he was named Most Valuable Player by his team-mates. Coe teams on which he played won or shared two Midwest Conference titles.
After graduation from Coe, Dan received his Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Iowa. He has built a career in human services administration and is active in community affairs. He is the Vice President of Abbe Center in Cedar Rapids and Executive Director of [Aging Services, Inc. He also is currently president of the Alzheimer's Association of East Central Iowa.
Given March winds, April showers, and May snowstorms in Iowa, college baseball can sometimes go almost unnoticed. But Dan Strellner's sterling performance as a strikeout artist and winning pitcher earns its own recognition and we are pleased to honor Dan through induction into the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
