Hall of Fame
Dr. Robert H. Young, Class of 1965, distinguished himself as a scholar, athlete, and as participant in student affairs. Having performed as a gridiron standout during his years as a Coe student, Young was recognized by his teammates as their Most Valuable Player after his senior year. Bob's leadership and inspired play at fullback and linebacker were most instrumental in that 1964 team's Midwest Athletic Conference co-championship. In an extremely hard-fought game with previously undefeated arch-rival Cornell, Young blocked a Cornell punt near the latter's goal line which led to Coe's second touchdown of the day and an eventual 15-14 Coe victory. During that same contest, Young was recognized by the press for his open-field tackling of the talented Cornell backs. In his senior year, Young served his fellow athletes and the college as president of the prestigious Clan of C. Significantly, Young's leadership talents were recognized in his major field of study, where he served as president of the Psychology Club. He also served the Sigma Nu fraternity as rush chairman and as vice-president. Campus-wide recognition, perhaps inspired by performance and leadership in athletics, most accurately manifests itself through the various dimensions of one's personality. It is indeed noteworthy that Young was chosen as the Ideal Fraternity Man by the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. After leaving Coe, Young earned master's and doctor's degrees from Southern Illinois University and currently is vice president and dean of students at Ripon College. In recognition of outstanding leadership in athletics and campus life, we are proud to induct Dr. Robert H. Young into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
