Gregg Trosky took the long road across town to Coe College from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. The All-State tailback spent one year riding the bench at the University of Northern Iowa, which recruited him with promises of playing time. He transferred to Peninsula College in Monterey, Calif., then back to UNI and then enrolled at Kirkwood Community College, seemingly ending his football career. But Gregg found athletic redemption after head coach Roger Schlegel lured him to Coe in 1980. "Gregg Trosky's addition to our team has made us a contender in my second year here," Schlegel told the Cedar Rapids Gazette as the Kohawks prepared to play Cornell with the Midwest Conference title on the line. "We would not be where we're at if not for his help." As a junior playing alongside Coe Hall of Famers Larry Atwater at quarter-back and Tom Marshall at split end, Gregg led the Midwest Conference in rushing with 1,039 yards, then a Coe single-season record, and scored 14 touchdowns. He finished seventh nationally in rushing and third in scoring and was named an honorable mention Division III All-American. Early season injuries notwithstanding, he rushed for 915 yards and eight touchdowns in 1981. Averaging about six yards per carry in his two seasons as a Kohawk, he earned first-team All-Conference honors both years. After graduating in 1982 with a bachelor's in physical education, Gregg spent six months in professional football with the Chicago Blitz of the United States Football League. After 18 years in the travel business, Gregg recently joined All American Turf Beauty as Eastern Iowa sales manager. He has also coached high school football for three seasons at his alma mater and two at Cedar Rapids Prairie. In recent years, he has coached youth football and baseball. He and his wife of 20 years, Lisa, son Anthony, 14, and daughters Lauren, 10, and Ellie, 5, live in nearby Walford, Iowa. For his outstanding contributions to Coe College athletics, we are privileged to welcome Gregg Trosky to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
