In the days when Coe tried to be the giant killer against football giants like the University of Illinois and Notre Dame, Carlton DeWitt was a stalwart performer at tackle for Moray Eby's Crimson team. Weighing in at 190 lbs., a size that would make him a lightweight on a modern football squad, Duke DeWitt was an all-conference and all-state performer at Coe. He was selected to the Chicago Tribune's All-American team and was listed in Who's Who in American Sports. After graduation from Coe he built a productive career in education and sports. For twenty-nine years he taught industrial arts at El Cerrito High School in California. He also taught at Grass Valley and Berkeley high schools and coached at Lake City and Berkeley. Keeping active in sports, Duke DeWitt managed summer camps for the city of Berkeley for eleven years and also worked as a playground director, coaching football, basketball and baseball. He also was a basketball official in industrial leagues in Oakland and Berkeley. Duke DeWitt was a memorable player in a memorable era of Coe football. As one of his teammates, it is a special honor for me to present him for induction into the Coe Athletic Hall of Fame.
