Nicholas Hobbs, Class of 1976, liked to do things by two's at Coe. In so doing, he became one of the most memorable wrestlers in the college history. He attended Coe for two years, after graduating from Kirkwood Community College with an A.A. degree. He was a member of the wrestling team for two years, under Coach Barron Bremner. Twice he won the Midwest Conference championship at 142 pounds. Twice he won All-American honors, those honors coming in 1975 and 1976. Most importantly, he was twice the runner-up in the national NCAA Division III championships. Thus, he could be called the number two small college wrestler in his weight division in each of two years. In his two years as a wrestling letterman, Nick Hobbs' record was 44 wins and only four losses. In Nick's senior year, Coe hosted the NCAA Division III nationals and finished 11th among the 70 entries. That year, their loss to Winona State was the first loss in dual meets in two years. Nick Hobbs continued his winning ways as the wrestling coach at the Charles City, Iowa, high school. Over a 13-year span, his career coaching record has been 104 wins and only 27 losses. His 1986 Charles City team won the Class 3-A championship. In 1987, the Charles City team was a runner-up in Iowa dual meet competition. It is noteworthy that Charles City has the smallest enrollment in Class 3-A in Iowa. Nick Hobbs also was coach of the Iowa freestyle team for four years. Nick built a championship record for himself as an athlete at Coe. He has continued to produce champions as a high school coach and teacher. In recognition of All-American status and his national standing as a wrestler, it is a pleasure to welcome Nick Hobbs to the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
