In May 1979, a sportswriter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette said, "Charlie recently wrapped up the regular season schedule with a set of statistics that defy mortal adjectives." Those amazing numbers included a .483 batting average, 28 runs scored, 28 runs batted in 27 games, a team-leading 14 doubles, a team-leading five triples, a team-leading 42 hits, five stolen bases, and an incredible on-base percentage of .736. As a catcher on the baseball team, Boothe won every honor the Kohawks had to give and extended his streak to the national level. With the nation- ally-ranked Kohawks dominating the NCAA Divison III baseball honors for District V, Charlie Boothe was selected the top player in the district. : Boothe was named Coe's Most Valuable Player in 1978 and 1979. In both years Charlie also was named to the Midwest Conference all-league team. As a junior, he was a co-captain of the team and as a senior, he was the team captain. Boothe dominated many of the games he played in. Take, for instance, the pounding Coe gave Cornell in a doubleheader. The Kohawks breezed to a pair of easy wins 14-3 and 6-0 on this particular May day. Boothe rapped five hits and made major contributions in other areas, gunning down several runners on the base paths and providing quiet guidance for the pitchers. His coach, Rick Hartzell, said after those games, "If there's anybody around better than Charlie, I haven't seen them yet. He's worked very hard to get to where he is. He's not a really vocal player, but he has a steadying effect on this team." Boothe also got a chance to play professional ball, playing with the Cedar Rapids Giants. To honor a dominating player on Coe's dominating teams, we add Charles Boothe to the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
