Transferring to Coe after one year at Division I Western Illinois, Cedar Rapids native Jeff Hrubes was an impact player on both ends of the basketball court and Coe's MVP for three seasons. He was Coe's leading scorer in 17 of 22 games his sophomore year. He averaged 17.9 points per game and was named second-team All-Midwest Conference. He was a first-team all-conference selection his junior year, averaging 19.9 points per game and again leading the Kohawks in scoring in 17 of 22 games. He set a school record that season with a 35-point performance against Illinois College. Twenty-two years later, that mark ranks ninth all-time. He became a two-time first-team all-conference selection his senior year, averaging 17.2 points per game as the Kohawks enjoyed their first winning season in 12 years. Jeff finished his career fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,141 points in just three years. He currently ranks ninth all-time in career scoring. A 63 percent shooter, he held the school record for career field goal percentage for seven years and currently stands second. He held the school record for career blocked shots for eight years and now ranks fourth. He graduated fourth on the career assists list and now ranks 22nd. His 491 career rebounds ranked fifth upon graduation and he currently ranks eighth all-time. He shot 68.4 percent from the field his senior year to finish second in the nation and set a school record that stood for seven years. He holds three of the top nine spots in single-season field goal percentage, while no one else appears more than once. Until 2008, Jeff was the only player in Coe basketball history to top 1,000 points, 50 blocks, 125 assists and 450 rebounds in a career. Jeff also lettered in football his junior year, catching two passes for 23 yards and a touchdown from his tight end position. As a prep, he helped Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School to a state basketball championship in 1984. He was named second-team all-state in high school and male athlete of the year at Kennedy, where he has served as a varsity assistant coach for 11 years and was named Iowa 4A Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008. He was inducted into the Kennedy Hall of Fame in 1997. After college, he continued to play in the NCCA-approved Prime Time League for 20 years. He also played exhibition basketball for Marathon Oil and Pella Windows, winning games against the likes of Iowa, Drake, DePaul and UNI while leading Pella Windows to the 1998 Men's AAU National Championship. At age 32, he averaged 16.5 points per game. Jeff and his wife, Kathy, along with their children, live in Cedar Rapids, where he works in product assurance at Rockwell Collins. For his outstanding contributions to Kohawk athletics-and for his undying love for the game of basketball—I am honored to present my teammate, Jeff Hrubes, for induction into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
