Hall of Fame
The late Charles B. Claypool, Class of 1936, was a memorable athlete in a memorable era in Coe's sports history. He played tackle on Moray Eby's teams of 1932-33-34. In those days when Eby was so highly respected that the newspapers used his choices for their All-State and All-Conference teams, Charles Claypool appeared on both of those lists as a tackle. Among Mr. Claypool's fondest football recollections must have been the 1933 homecoming game. He blocked a punt and recovered the ball for the touchdown that defeated arch-rival Cornell. He lent his talents also to track and he won a conference championship in the discus. After graduation, he coached in Terril and Pella, Iowa. In 1940 he entered the U.S. Army and retired as a colonel after years of distinguished service. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action at Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea. His uniform carried a host of ribbons and honors, including, among others, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. of A graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, Colonel Claypool was assistant to the Chief of Staff, Army General Staff. Today we take pleasure in inducting Colonel Charles B. Claypool into the Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously.
