Dawn Rayner Herber ’96 began her Coe College track and field career as an All-American in the 1,600-meter relay, the first Kohawk men’s or women’s relay team to achieve such status. She capped her career as an All-American in the 400-meter hurdles. In between were conference and meet championships, two indoor and two outdoor Midwest Conference team championships, and school records as she etched her name among the Kohawk greats.
As a freshman, Herber won her first Midwest Conference indoor championship as part of Coe’s record-setting 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. In addition to placing sixth in the nation with Nikki Claussen ’95, Brenda Heisner Green ’95 and Laurie Pote Dufoe ’94 on Coe’s 1,600-meter relay team in the outdoor season, Herber won the 400-meter hurdles at the Midwest Conference championships and was named the team’s outstanding freshman.
As a sophomore, Herber won two Midwest Conference indoor championships in the 55-meter hurdles and as part of Coe’s 4x200-meter relay team. She won a Midwest Conference outdoor championship with Coe’s NCAA qualifying 4X400-meter relay team and set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles.
Herber set school and Midwest Conference records in the 200-meter hurdles during the indoor season her junior year while also winning two more conference championships with Coe’s 4x200-meter and school record-setting 4x400-meter relay teams. She finished the outdoor season that year as Midwest Conference champion and NCAA qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles and with the 4x400-meter relay team.
Herber capped her Coe career as team MVP, setting a Midwest Conference record in winning her second-straight 400-meter hurdles title and placing fifth in the NCAA Championships for her first individual All-American honor.
Herber is a copy editor at Workiva. She and husband, Pete, live in Salt Lake City with their children, Ellie and Tate.
