Silas Hudson, Jr., Class of 1979, has the honor of being one of few Kohawks to win a national championship. In 1978 and 1979, he placed first in the 110-meter high hurdles at the NCAA Division III National Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, earning All-America honors both years. Silas Hudson came to Coe from New Jersey and starred in both track and basketball. He was a key member of Coach Wayne Phillips' track and field teams that won an unprecedented eight consecutive Midwest Conference championships. Any track meet was a busy day for Silas Hudson. For example, at the 1978 Midwest Conference Championship Meet he placed first in the 120-yard high hurdles, breaking an 18-year-old conference record. Then, he won the 100-yard dash in 9.9 seconds. He finished his day as a member of the 440-yard championship relay team. Even though he graduated 10 years ago, two of Silas Hudson's records still stand as Coe records today. In 1978, he did the indoor 50-yard high hurdles in 6.4 seconds. In 1979, he ran the outdoor 120-yard high hurdles in 14 seconds flat. No Coe runner has ever bettered these marks. Silas Hudson was also a high-scoring member of the Coe basketball team. On the court, he totaled 441 points in his four years of competition. As we induct Silas Hudson, Jr. into the Coe Athletic Hall of Fame, we pay tribute to a national champion, to an All-American, and to a record-setting runner whose records have yet to be broken.
