If one name could be linked to the women's track and field program at Coe, it would have to be Brenda Heisner Green. Unlike many athletes of today, Brenda began contributing to the program in her freshman year, as she was named the Most Outstanding Freshman. During her freshman year, she set Midwest Conference records in the 200- and 400-meter dash. She was also a member of the sprint medley team that qualified for the Drake Relays. She won the 400-meter dash and tied for first in the 200-meter dash at the Midwest Conference Championships, where the Kohawks came away with the team title. Brenda also qualified for the Drake Relays her sophomore year, this time as a member of the 1600-meter relay. That same relay squad qualified for the NCAA Championships, where they finished sixth in a time of 3:57.3. The sixth-place finish earned All-American honors, the first by any relay team in Coe history. Brenda was named Co-Most Valuable Athlete her junior year as she won the Midwest Conference title in the 400-meter dash, the 4x400 relay and the 4x100 relay. The 4x100 relay team set a new conference record in 49.33. After the conference championships, she qualified for the NCAA Championships in all three events. She earned her second All-American honor in the 400-meter dash, as she placed seventh with a new school-record 57.13. Saving her best performances for her senior year, Brenda won the 200- and 400-meter dashes at the Indoor Midwest Conference championships, setting a new conference record of 26.62 in the 200-meter dash. Along with her two individual titles, she ran on the conference champion 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams, the latter of which set a conference record in 4:07.42. Brenda also set new conference records in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes in winning the outdoor conference championships. She also ran on the winning 4x400 relay at the conference meet. In the final meet of her collegiate career, she qualified in four different events (the 200- and 400-meter dash and the 400- and 1600-meter relay) at the NCAA Championships. She was named an All-American in two different events as she finished third in the 400-meter dash and seventh in the 400-meter relay. She was again named Co-Most Valuable Athlete and helped the Kohawks to six conference titles (three indoor and three outdoor) in four years. A psychology major at Coe, Brenda currently works as director of an immediate care facility for United Cerebral Palsy. Brenda and her husband, James, live in Alexander, Ark., with their infant daughter, Claire. For her outstanding contributions to Kohawk track, I am honored to present Brenda Heisner Green for induction into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
