Jack Fulton had an outstanding basketball career at Coe College and continued after graduation from Coe to have commendable careers in both the public and private sectors. After graduation from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids, Fulton enrolled at Coe where he quickly became known for his athletic ability. The 1951 Acorn says "Coe's freshman basketball team was one of the finest that has ever played for the Crimson and Gold. Paced by six-foot, seven-inch center Jack Fulton, Bill Fitch, Ronnie Peck and Dave Johnston, the 'Kohawklets' were victorious in all three of their games..." In his sophomore year Fulton topped the Coe scoring with 247 points in 20 games and he was awarded an honorable mention on the All-Conference team. The towering pivot was named Most Valuable by his teammates in his junior year, posting an 18.8 average. But the best was in Jack's senior year. That year the team, coached by Theron Thomsen, had an overall record of 18-4, 9-3 in the conference. They were co-champions of the Midwest Conference and they ended their highly successful campaign as the runner-up in the state NAIA Tournament held at Coe. Jack was a first-team Midwest Conference selection. At the end of his career, his 384 points were a Coe College record. Fulton was also an outstanding baseball player at Coe. This versatile athlete was named Most Valuable Player on the 1954 conference championship team. Fulton went on to law school at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1957. He practiced law in Cedar Rapids for four years and was elected County Attorney for Linn County in 1962, 1964, and 1966. In 1967, he was appointed Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety for the State of Iowa and served in that capacity for four years. In 1971, he moved to Richmond, Virginia, taking the position of Director of Public Safety for the City of Richmond, and served in that capacity for seventeen years. Since 1988 he has been in the private practice of law. It is with great pleasure that we induct Jack Fulton into the Coe Athletic Hall of Fame.
