Andrew A. Fairlie came from Swisher, Iowa, to Coe College as a freshman in 1970 and played freshman football, the beginning of an outstanding career as a football player and wrestler for the Kohawks. For three years, Andy was a defensive guard and end on the Coe football team. His skill and hard play won him All-Conference honors and Little All-American Honorable Mention in 1972. But, Andy will be remembered by Coe sports fans for his wrestling, even more than for his football. Andy Fairlie was Midwest Conference champion for four consecutive years, three years at 158 pounds and in his senior year at 167 pounds. That unbroken string of Conference championships was climaxed first in 1973 by Andy's being voted the Most Valuable Wrestler in the Conference meet. Even though he moved up a weight in 1974, he repeated not only as Conference champion but, again, won the coveted title Most Valuable Wrestler in that Conference meet. He earned Little All-American honors at the Division III National Tournament in 1974 by claiming fifth place in that meet. After graduation, Andy has commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. While awaiting assignment for active duty, he served as linebacker coach for the 1974 Coe football team. Now a Major in the Air Force, he is certified to fly both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. He currently is stationed at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa. As a well-conditioned, consistent winner, Major Andrew A. Fairlie merits recognition for induction into the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame as an all-American in two sports. Thus, we are proud to add his name to the long list of outstanding athletes who have made competitive sports an exciting and valuable part of life at Coe College.
