Daniel J. Schmitt, Class of 1975, put together a record of athletic and academic achievements at Coe that has rarely been equaled. A transfer from the U.S. Air Force Academy during his freshman year, Dan majored in economics and business and was elected to both Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic honorary societies. On the wrestling mat, he was Midwest Conference Champion in both 1974 and 1975. In 1974 he became Coe's first undefeated wrestler with a 24-0 record, earning five tournament titles and winning all his dual meet matches. His three-year record was 61-8-1. But it was on the gridiron that Dan Schmitt carved his indelible mark on Coe athletic history. A devastating blocker at offensive guard, Dan was given much credit for Coe's 1973 NCAA Division III national rankings of 6th in rushing, 3rd in total offense, and 3rd in scoring. He was elected captain and most valuable player of the 1974 squad and won All-Midwest Conference honors in 1973 and 1974. His skills were so noteworthy that he rose above the pack nationally to be named to both the Kodak Coaches All-American and the Associated Press All-American teams. While he has chosen the oil business as his career, Dan still helps coach wrestling at North Tama High School and football at Garwin High School. There are many who remember with excitement those Saturday afternoons when Dan Schmitt's crunching blocks triggered the top offensive machine in the Midwest Conference to sixteen wins and two losses in two seasons. With those memories still alive we welcome Dan Schmitt into membership of the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
