It would not be an insult to call David Showalter a ball hog. As a defensive back for the Coe football team, he sometimes touched the ball as many times during a game as a wide receiver. In a 1980 contest against defending Midwest Conference champion Lawrence, Dave picked off the Viking quarterback twice. Those interceptions led to Coe's first two touchdowns. Dave ranks in the top-10 in many interception categories in the Kohawk record book. His 20 career interceptions stood as the record for 11 years until Richard Matthews broke it in 1992. His eight interceptions in both 1980 and 1981 rank as the third most all-time. He held the record for career interception return yards with 306 until Matthews passed him in his four-year career. His school-record 119 return yards in 1980 stood six years and now ranks fourth on the all-time list. During his sophomore campaign, he was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player on a 5-4 Kohawk squad. After putting his name in the school record books, and ranking eighth in the nation in interceptions, he was named a third-team All-American. He led the highly-touted Kohawk defense during his senior year as he was named first-team All-Midwest Conference. The Kohawks finished 7-2 that year. Dave's durability was second to none as he played in every game during his four-year career. Not only did he play in every game, but he started every game from his sophomore year on. While he was a four-year letterwinner on the gridiron, he also lettered his first three years on the baseball diamond. Dave held a special place on the Kohawk roster his senior year, as he was one of 35 returning players for coach Roger Schlegel's squad. Dave was one of five returning players who had already made a mark on the Coe record books. A business major at Coe, Dave is currently the purchasing director at Frontier Natural Products in Norway, Iowa. He lives in Cedar Rapids with his wife, Cathy. For his outstanding contributions to Kohawk athletics, I am honored to present David Show- alter for induction into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
